It is my life’s calling to help others claim their unique identity, clarify their purpose, and connect to a greater journey of life. Through the New Waters Group, I want to support you or your team as you navigate your next steps – personally, professionally, or organizationally.

Through my 25+ year career I’ve had the privilege of serving in numerous lead roles, including being a pastor, campus minister, and nonprofit executive director. I’ve also had the great joy of being an entrepreneur in building two new companies from the ground up, and I know the celebrations and challenges of being a small business owner. 

I want to offer the best of my experience, abilities, education, and training to you so that you can be a more effective leader and achieve your goals in your personal life, relationships, education, work, and service. Mickey is an executive leadership coach and founder of Beacon Leadership Coaching and Military LeaderShift. A retired naval officer, he served for twenty-two years, the last ten of which were spent teaching history, leadership, and ethics at the U.S. Naval Academy.

A firm believer in the power of stories, he works to help leaders recognize the stories they tell themselves and to understand how those narratives influence their perspectives and actions, as well as shape the cultures of the teams and organizations they lead.

Description of Coaching

Coaching begins with an assumption that clients are whole, wise, and highly knowledgeable about the nature of their own personal and professional development. Therefore, the coach’s primary role is to:

  • Create a safe and confidential space for the client
    Discover, clarify and align with what the client wants to achieve (assessments/pre-work)
  • Draw out the client’s wisdom through inquiry, curiosity, and gentle provocations
  • Encourage client self-discovery
  • Elicit client-generated solutions and strategies
  • Hold the client responsible and accountable
  • Help the client stretch into their best capacities through challenge and support

Coaching Approach

We approach coaching from a holistic lens, attentive to the client’s interior life (emotional, cognitive, and spiritual) as well as how their interior reality is expressed through their physical presence and behaviors. 

Coaching is distinctive from consulting, advising, therapy, or counseling. However, coaching may address personal issues or life conditions that have an impact on a client’s professional effectiveness.

Our approach to leadership coaching includes the following:

  • Determine client’s commitment to the coaching process: to solicit feedback, assess feedback, work to develop more effective behaviors, involve stakeholders to support desired changes, and measure the results of the behavior change effort.
  • Identify with the client the high leverage behaviors that will provide the most strategic benefit for the client and organization.
  • Partner with the client in understanding and responding to feedback.
  • Support the client in engaging more productively with stakeholders.
  • Conduct regularly scheduled coaching sessions in person, by phone, or through Zoom.
  • Be available to the client for needed coaching and consultation between regularly scheduled sessions.

Outcomes

The anticipated outcomes of leadership coaching for the client include:

  • Identification of the key behaviors to stop, start, or continue doing to increase leadership effectiveness.
  • Involvement and commitment of stakeholders (i.e., direct reports, peers, support staff, supervisor) in the process of helping to increase effectiveness.
  • With sufficient client commitment to the process, improvement will be noticeable and measurable (by ongoing feedback from stakeholders) on specific leadership behaviors.
  • Long-term effectiveness for the client and the client organization, based on increased capacity to achieve results through building and maintaining healthy relationships.
  • Maximize the client’s personal and professional potential through a though-provoking, creative, and individually customized coaching program specifically tailored to support the client’s desired outcomes and goals.
